In an increasingly turbulent world situation, these discussions look behind the headlines of the mainstream press and the statements of politicians, to bring out the real processes and interests at play.

The World School of Communism

Every two years, the Revolutionary Communist International hosts a world school. Bringing together thousands of communists from all around the globe in person and online for a week of discussion on Marxist theory, these schools are crash courses for steeling revolutionaries in the ideas we need to bring down this system. All of these talks have been made available to stream online, making them a permanent and extremely valuable resource. Alan Woods speaks on his forthcoming publication "Reformism or Revolution, Marxism and Socialism of the 21st century", (a reply to the views of Heinz Dietrich), at a crucial stage in the Venezuelan revolution, as the struggle unfolds between those who are trying to limit the revolution within the confines of capitalism and those revolutionary Bolivarians who are attempting to complete the socialist revolution.

Socialist Appeal recently held a day school in London on the events of 1968. In the second session Alan Woods, Political Editor of marxist.com, talks on the events of May 1968 in France.

Lenin is probably the most slandered individual of the 20th century. As leader of the Russian Revolution of 1917, he has been attacked by bourgeois academics, Tory, Labour and Liberal politicians as well as Establishment figures internationally. Heiko Khoo talks about the revolution in Germany in 1989. The defeats suffered by the German working class laid the ground for the rise of Nazism and World War 2. After the war Berlin became the focal point for the cold war. On November 9th 1989 the Berlin Wall was opened after the German Communist Party bureaucracy buckled under pressure from East Germans demonstrating for the democratisation of society.

Five years into the war in Iraq, the position of US imperialism in the Middle East is becoming untenable. US imperialism and their supporters in Europe are facing a potentially devastating defeat. Fred Weston of Marxist.com talked to the University of London Union Marxist Society on Wednesday on the current situation and the future for the Middle East.

Tomorrow is International Women's Day. Although governments and political parties around the world pay lip service to women's liberation, the liberation of women remains elusive. Barbara Humphries, long-term labour movement activist and Marxist, spoke on Wednesday evening at the ULU Marxist Society in London on the origins of International Women's Day, the necessity for capitalism to divide society on the basis of sex and how the emergence of class society made women second-class citizens.
