Against the Stream

Against the stream podcast page

In Against the Stream, our weekly current affairs podcast, members of the International Secretariat of the Revolutionary Communist International sit down to discuss the main events shaping global affairs. In an increasingly turbulent world situation, these discussions look behind the headlines of the mainstream press and the statements of politicians, to bring out the real processes and interests at play.

The World School of Communism

Every two years, the Revolutionary Communist International hosts a world school. Bringing together thousands of communists from all around the globe in person and online for a week of discussion on Marxist theory, these schools are crash courses for steeling revolutionaries in the ideas we need to bring down this system. All of these talks have been made available to stream online, making them a permanent and extremely valuable resource. With the deepening crisis of world capitalism and the decline of the power of US imperialism comes growing instability on a global scale. This explains the increasing number of diplomatic and military conflicts around the world, but also the growing class struggle and political radicalisation that goes with it. Listen to Fred Weston speaking on this and much more at the recent congress of the Canadian section of the IMT.

Since the end of April a militant movement of metal workers in the car industry in Turkey has been developing, with its epicentre in Bursa. Workers are fighting for better wages and conditions and for democratic trade union representation.

7th November marks the anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia (25th October in the Old Style calendar). The Russian Revolution was the single greatest event in human history, marking the first occasion - with the exception of the brief episode of the Paris Commune of 1871 - when the exploited and oppressed overthrew their exploiters and oppressors. To celebrate this historic event, we publish here a recording from the Bristol Marxist society, in which Adam Booth - editor of www.socialist.net - provides an analysis of 1917, outlining the key processes during the Revolution, and drawing out the main lessons for Marxists today.

In this video from the International Marxist Winter School 2014, Marie Frederiksen, editor of the Danish Marxist newspaper "Revolution", discusses the real revolutionary history, ideas, and traditions of Rosa Luxemburg, and draws out the valuable lessons we can learn for today.

Ylva Vinberg, editor of the Swedish Marxist Journal, Revolution, speaks on the attitude of Marxists towards Feminism.

Over the past weeks tensions have been rising in Ukraine. Offices of left-wing organisations and trade unions have been raided and the "acting government" has started proceedings to ban the Communist Party. Along with the building up of several armed bodies composed mainly of fascists and Nazi elements it is clear that the regime is stepping up the civil war against the peoples of the East. In the meantime Russia and Germany, for their own interests, are trying to broker a deal. Jorge Martin explains the situation from a Marxist point of view and makes an appeal to build solidarity with Ukrainian anti-fascists.
